We are products of Mississippi’s public schools, as are our children. We are proud of the education that we received, an education that allowed each of us to secure decent jobs and to become contributing citizens in our communities. That is exactly what we hope each child in a Mississippi school today will find … a way to fulfill whatever their dreams may be. Initiative 42 will bring us closer to that reality.
For the past 18 years, the Legislature has virtually ignored its own promise to fully fund our schools. This means that local governments have been forced to try to make up the difference. Higher local property taxes are the result in places where local economies are able. The school districts in poorer counties must try to survive on the “kindness” of their elected lawmakers.
